Brussels, 22 March 2012. Hamburg’s two major urban development projects, IBA and HafenCity, are currently giving a joint presentation at the EU parliament. The official start of the proceedings was on Wednesday evening, at the invitation of Hamburg’s Euro MP Birgit Schnieber-Jastram: ‘I am very pleased to have the opportunity of welcoming these two important urban development projects of the City of Hamburg to the EU parliament. Hamburg is a growing and dynamically developing city, as well as being a model for other European megacities to follow.’
The Chairman of the Management Board of HafenCity Hamburg GmbH, Jürgen Bruns-Berentelg, stressed that this European dialogue also stands to benefit Hamburg: ‘We would like to intensify discussion about the future of the city, and invite other cities to share their ideas with us – while at the same time keeping a lookout for the things we can learn from other international urban development projects.’ The Managing Director of International Building Exhibition IBA, Uli Hellweg, also spoke on the occasion of the exhibition opening: ‘The question is how the city of the future can grow sustainably. IBA offers a wide range of approaches to a solution, and we look forward to exchanging ideas with other European cities.’
