Second topping out ceremony on the Schlöperstieg

New Hamburg Terraces topping out ceremony

On Friday, 20 July 2012 at 14.00 hrs, the client and IBA Hamburg celebrated the second topping out ceremony in association with the IBA project "New Hamburg Terraces", which has three investors. The topping out wreath is now hanging from the association's section at the southern end of the Schlöperstieg. The group is building four more three-storey multiple family homes. Two of the buildings also have a small

mezzanine floor. In total there will be 33 residential units ranging from 55 to 160 m² in size. The building is scheduled for completion in time for the IBA presentation year 2013.

The multiple family dwelling had celebrated the first topping out ceremony on the Schlöperstieg for the day nursery of the "Neue Hamburger Terrassen OhG".

Hamburg, 20 July 2012 – "I am delighted that the collaboration with the association is progressing so well that we have now been able to celebrate the second topping out ceremony for the New Hamburg Terraces. There are several things about this project that make it special. As a new quarter, it integrates well in the natural district, and encourages good neighbourliness. Furthermore, it has also created a transition to the adjoining park landscape, which represents quality for the residents. And finally, the buildings all comply with the highest energy standards," reports IBA managing director Uli Hellweg.

The building association is one of three investors that are building the new residential district in the southern part of the Schlöperstieg. The association was already in existence in 2009 when the IBA Hamburg launched a building groups association. The association is constructing a total of four three-storey multifamily dwellings with 33 residential units. Two of the buildings will also have a mezzanine level. Peter Möller, a member of the building group, said, "The topping out ceremony is a big event for our relatively new association. New inasmuch as we only started up at the end of 2009/beginning of 2010. Our oldest member is 65 years old, and our newest one was born just 16 days ago. It's not just that we're curious about a part of a town and its inhabitants that had been somewhat neglected in the past, and is now catching up with the rest of Hamburg. We are also most impressed by the architecture of the complex itself, and by the surrounding area, especially the elements that encourage a community spirit ."

The original design by LAN Architecture* consisted exclusively of terraced houses. However, the design was modified to accommodate the residents' differing requirements, and two of the four buildings now include apartments. Stairwells were added at the heads of the buildings. The wood cladding and large windows add a very exclusive look to the four buildings. Loggias and roof terraces provide space for the residents to relax, and offer views of the neighbouring gardens or the park of the international garden show igs 2013. Heiner Baumgarten, managing director of igs hamburg, said: "The project demonstrates quite clearly how IBA and igs complement each other. It stands for a new kind of living, just as the igs stands for a new kind of open air design. As part of the igs, the gardens' houses will have a  very special appeal and will be open to visitors. As we see it, they should be places where residents become neighbours."

The buildings all follow the principle of sustainability and meet the highest energy standards. Roof gardens encourage the aspect of sustainability, and the "green" character of the area; the Schlöperstieg has an abundance of established trees, especially to the south. The association's four buildings will be supplied by an energy centre in the building. It will contain three 'home power stations' provided by energy supplier Lichtblick that will provide the necessary heating and hot water as well as the electricity,  centrally controlled by cogeneration of heat and power. This means the energy centre will respond flexibly when the available levels of the renewable energies wind and sun fall too low. The generated heat will be collected in buffer stores.

The "New Hamburg Terraces" residential area

An innovative, family-friendly residential area with 94 residential units is being constructed on the Schlöperstieg in the southern part of Wilhelmsburg in association with the IBA project "New Hamburg Terraces", which will blend smoothly with the urban and rural environments. A competition was launched to find solutions for a district that was to be particularly notable for its community spirit. The special architecture of the new buildings is based on Hamburg's traditional terraces, such as can still be seen today in, for instance, the Falkenried. The southern part of the district in particular has an abundance of established trees that were retained in the plans, and a canal flows to the west. The transition between compact town and loose park landscapes is a former pub that has been converted into a waterworks. The residential area will be part of the international garden show (igs) from April to October 2013.
