Topping out wreath for the "Pearl" block - the pearl of Harburg's Castle Island

IBA project Marina on the Castle Island: topping out ceremony for yet another stage

Hamburg, 24 August 2012 – Today, Friday 24 August 2012, Lorenz + Partner invited guests to another topping out ceremony on Harburg's Castle Island on behalf of investor Provinzial  Rehinland Versicherung AG. The shell of the  "Pearl" building, one of seven in the building project and IBA project Marina on the Castle Island, is complete, and is now sporting its topping out wreath.

The building is based on the former storage building of the harbour company Andreas Hansen. At twelve storeys, it will be the highest building on the castle island. The seven buildings of the Marina on the Castle Island will contain a total of 162 residential units of two to six rooms and measuring from 60 to 230 m².

There is room for 30 privately-owned apartments in the silo, which has been built to resemble its original shape, all with views of the City of Hamburg.

"Architecturally, this building is quite striking. In its use, it combines history, harbour and urban green with a waterside living environment. The old silo will be the connecting link between the former use as a harbour, and modern, exclusive housing construction with a harbour flair," explained IBA project coordinator Karen Pein on the occasion of the festive topping out ceremony.

Harburg's Castle Island is an excellent example of IBA Hamburg's issue of "Metrozones". This location, which was once central to Harburg, and which is separated from the current centre of the southern part of Hamburg by traffic roads, has become an outer region.

The castle island was eliminated from the harbour development region in the autumn of 2010. That was the starting shot for the development of a new quarter. The castle island was to be given a mix of private living, new and exclusive industry, and existing commercial usage. The result is a new quality of urbanity, and a new image of the town.

To the north-east of the island, the creation of the marina on the castle island is the realisation of a new residential area that is notable for its unique waterside location and the land-side connection to the planned park on Harburg's Castle Island, and which offers attractive rental and privately owned apartments. The concept includes various building typologies, including loft apartments and stacked terraced houses.

And thanks to its location by the non-tidal river port, it is possible to make use of the maritime setting. There are private landing stages right outside the owners' front doors.

Thanks to the public right of way on what are actually private properties, the water's edge is for the first time being made accessible to all residents of Harburg, thus enabling visitors to the area to enjoy the delightful waterside location. The area around Harburg's inland port is slowly becoming a lively district by the water. On the land side, the proposed star-shaped park on Harburg's Castle Island adjoins the new residential area, further increasing the leisure value for residents. This sustainable development is of key significance to improving the living and working conditions in Harburg's inland port.
