International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg

Building exhibitions are like laboratories set up for a limited time and are among the most influential tools known to town planners. The visible legacy of a building exhibition is its exemplary construction models. In the seven years between the end of 2006 and 2013, the International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg developed and completed a total of 70 projects, 63 of which were buildings. These projects, which include residential blocks, innovative case studies, educational and sports facilities, senior citizens’ centres, places where local businesses and creative workers can spread their wings, the widely known Energy Bunker and parks and open spaces, now shape the appearance of this part of southern Hamburg: the International Building Exhibition turned a regional, national and international spotlight on the long-neglected districts of Wilhelmsburg, Veddel and Harburg Upriver Port. But the intangible results of a building exhibition are every bit as important as the visible legacy: two outcomes, the Elbe Islands Education Campaign, and the Renewable Wilhelmsburg climate protection concept have been exceptionally important structural developments. IBA Hamburg has created new ideas and answers to the building needs of the future. In this context, seven IBA criteria for excellence ensured consistently high town planning and architectural qualities.
