Centre of Language and Exercise
The idea that moving around facilitates learning is set to be implemented in language teaching at the Centre of Language and Exercise in the Reiherstieg district. Here residents of all ages can learn German and other languages through movement. At the same time, the centre also contributes to the broader local network of educational establishments, and provides a space for a wide range of opportunities focused on sport and exercise, continuing education.
The Centre of Language and Exercise is being built in the Rotenhäuser Damm area of Reiherstieg, and will have a double-pitch sports hall, seminar rooms, exercise areas, a library, and a large foyer with a café overlooking the park.
The layout, presented as part of an architectural competition, was devised in conjunction with those who would use it in the future. The commission was awarded to the Hamburg-based firm of architects eins:eins, and the work was carried out by GMH | Gebäudemanagement Hamburg GmbH on behalf of Hamburg Schools.
Aims and Objectives of the Centre of Language and Exercise
The connection between language and exercise, which at first seems less than obvious, is endorsed here. Scientific studies have proven that such methods can improve language development in young children, and they are now set to be applied within every age group. When a person moves about, he or she activates the motor centres of the brain. These centres play a vital role in the way in which information is processed and stored. Like playing music, committing sequences of movements to memory is good practice for learning languages. Exercise promotes mental ability, even in older people. Yet taking part in sports is not the only way of keeping the body and mind fit - bringing language acquisition and exercise together makes learning richer and more appealing. The centre is intended to serve as a model for the better integration of immigrants and their children, with language and exercise programmes offered to all age groups. Here there will be support for both language acquisition for children and learning German as a second language, through the use of exercise-based activities. Children and teenagers are given the opportunity to increase their wellbeing and self-confidence through group sports. Participation in sport and exercise can build trust and facilitate access to further guidance and educational programmes.
The centre is also set to become a place of advanced training in language and exercise for the whole of the Elbe Islands. Child care workers, language educators, sports teachers, trainers, and social education workers meet here to combine language with exercise in respect to their work.
