Top Climate Plan - 'Neuenfelder Strasse 107'
In January 2009 the Internationale Bauausstellung IBA (International Building Exhibition) Hamburg, in conjunction with its partners, launched the “Top Climate Plan: Achieving Environmentally Friendly Buildings with the IBA”.
In addition to carrying out model projects, the aim of the campaign was to raise awareness among property owners about energy standards and the potential for renovating their homes. In summer 2009 a total of 65 homeowners had their properties assessed by an energy consultant, and received an “IBA Excellence” Hamburg Energy Pass. The first renovation plans were put into action by late 2011, and more projects have been completed in spring 2013.
One of the buildings to be investigated was the property at Neuenfelder Strasse 107. This 1930s semi-detached house is typical of the type of housing found in the Kirchdorf area, and was badly in need of renovation. Only the roof had been insulated. Heating and hot water were supplied by a standard gas boiler.
As a result, the building had a primary energy requirement of 291 kilowatt-hours per square metre per year.
The following measures were undertaken to bring the property up to “IBA Excellence in Renovation Standard”:
- Composite heat insulation on the exterior walls to comply with Passive House criteria
- Rafter insulation in pitched roof to comply with Passive House criteria
- Insulation of building’s base using highly insulating vacuum panels – an advanced new technique
- Replacement of windows with triple-glazing suitable for Passive House standard
- Installation of controlled ventilation system with heat recovery
- Installation of condensing gas boiler with solar thermal hot water and heating support
The highly insulating vacuum panels used are technically innovative and an example of an intelligent approach to insulation of a building without an underground base.
After the building work has been completed, the property has been classed as Efficiency House standard 70, with an energy requirement 30 per cent below the standard for new buildings.
