Island Park Hall

The Island Park Hall, situated at the southern end of the Park Island entrance complex, has a dual purpose: it houses a new swimming pool and a high-quality sports hall under one roof. In the middle of the building exhibition area evolved, it has become an important part of the sports scene on the Elbe islands, and urban life in Wilhelmsburg is set to benefit greatly from its presence.

An Effective yet Decorative Exterior Design

The challenge of this project was to combine the planned swimming pool and basketball hall under one roof, while at the same time integrating the enormous structure into the new district, which was otherwise characterised by small, compartmentalised sections. This difficult task was addressed impressively in the prize-winning design by the architects Allmann Sattler Wappner, from Munich. By devising an exterior façade with four different surfaces they have created a decorative shell around the hall, each reflecting aspects of the neighbourhood, and clearly enhancing the diversity of the area.

The main entrance can be found on the northwest façade, which has the appearance of a green display window. The whole of the ground floor is behind glass. Above it are hanging gardens and planted areas running the entire length of the building, interrupted only by signage. The side facing the WÄLDERHAUS features a wooden façade. On the eastern side a solar-air-collector façade can be used for heat generation, comprising a kind of solar collector that uses air instead of water as the heat conductor.

A New Home for Wilhelmsburg’s Swimming Pool

In spring 2013 was the opening of an architecturally cutting-edge, dynamic, and cost-efficient swimming pool within the Island Park Hall. The new pool, designed by Bäderland Hamburg GmbH, replaces the former pool on Dratelnstrasse, which had to be relocated when the new State Ministry for Urban Development and the Environment was built. The swimming pool offers lots of opportunities to its visitors. There is a focus on school groups, amateur sports, and competitive use – for instance, it will be the new home of Hamburg’s water polo team – as well as offering a wide range of activities for families and children.

The new pool offers plenty of space for swimming enthusiasts of all ages. It will enrich the sports and leisure facilities in the district and will become a new day trip destination in the middle of the park, increasing the overall quality of life for local Wilhelmsburg residents. One major highlight of the building is its south façade, which can be fully opened using sliding wall panels if the weather is warm. This allows a smooth transition between the interior of the building and the exterior, where a lawn gives the pool an open-air feel.

From Flower Hall to Basketball Court

In 2013 the second part of the Island Park Hall was initially used by the international garden show hamburg 2013, displaying changing flower shows for the first half of the year. Following this, the Island Park Hall was converted to a modern, triple-field sports hall which now offers a variety of opportunities and an appealing range of sports, social, and educational facilities for children and young people from the Elbe islands and the wider area. Since 2014 it is the home base of the prominent Hamburg Basketball Team of the 2nd german Bundesliga (national league). The concept behind this was conceived by the organisation Verein Sport ohne Grenze e.V. (Sport without Borders, SOG), which was founded in 2006 by Marvin Willoughby, the former professional basketball player and member of the German national team, among others.
