The IBA 2010-2012

In 2010 the International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg reached its halfway point and celebrated its interim Presentation Year. An extensive programme of events, exhibitions, and tours drew in around 80,000 visitors, many of whom were visiting Hamburg's Elbe Islands for the very first time.

The first three projects were completed: the neighbourhood “Pavilion on Weimarer Platz”, the “VELUX Model Home 2020” in Kirchdorf, and the “IBA DOCK”. In spring the IBA team moved into the floating building in the Müggenburg Customs Port. By late 2010, construction had begun on 18 of the approximate 50 projects planned as part of the IBA Hamburg.

In 2011 the IBA programme continued with tours, events, and exhibitions, and attracted 160,000 people. An IBA touring exhibition visited major shopping centres in the Hamburg region, raising public awareness of the changes taking place in Wilhelmsburg. The IBA Hamburg won a nationwide tender issued by the Ministry for Transport, Construction, and Urban Development to curate the German contribution to the Architecture Biennale in São Paulo.

Two more exhibitions in Hamburg itself demonstrated how things were progressing. The information centre at the “Georgswerder Energy Hill” opened during the Bergfest, and following the inauguration of the igs Centre, this venue hosted the exhibition “Wilhelmsburg Central – Building the City Anew”. By 2011 the IBA featured about 60 projects, of which 11 had been completed and 30 were under construction.

In 2012 the focus was on the construction sites. Guided tours showcased the ongoing building projects and drew in many interested visitors. As a prelude to the upcoming Presentation Year, the IBA LOUNGE went on tour through Germany and other German-speaking countries, conducting “Talks on the New City”, with renowned and locally based urban experts.
